Wii console at E3 a doppelganger? [update 1]

Wii

Recently, there has been a slew of well-supported rumours that no one actually played a Nintendo Wii system at E3. It is now common belief that gamers in the Nintendo booth were playing an early development kit, or perhaps even a GameCube with Wii-remote functionality. The latter is most likely incorrect, as it has already been announced that Wii development kits were bundled in an empty GameCube case. However, there is solid evidence supporting the former. Take a look at this picture. Also, one man claims that while his friends were playing the Wii version of Twilight Princess, the game crashed, but the blue light on the Wii console that was displayed stayed on. Instead, to re-power the system, someone unlocked the TV stand and a black GameCube was visible. Read the entire claim here.

What exactly does this mean? Well, depending on how primitive the developing kits were, we may not have witnessed the Wii’s true potential graphical power. Time will tell if this rumour holds any truth.

[update 1]: GameDaily reports that Nintendo has confirmed that the demos seen at E3 were running on specially made consoles using GameCube housings. The actual hardware was Wii hardware, it was just put inside a GameCube case. “The Wii hardware we exhibited at E3 2006 was made specifically for the E3 show and is not the final mass-production version. Some of this hardware was cased in Nintendo GameCube housing,” the company explained.
