Wii and GameSpy sitting in a tree

GameSpy y0!

In a “What? What!? What!?!?” moment, today GameSpy has announced that they have entered into an agreement with Nintendo to provide multiplayer matchmaking services for the Wii Platform. If you aren’t aware, GameSpy offers a game matching service for the PC (mainly) that parallels much of what Xbox live does.

“This partnership will expand our wireless community of players on Nintendo® Wi-Fi Connection,” said Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. “Millions of Nintendo DS users have already logged on using GameSpy’s technology, and now Wii owners will be able to do the same in a fun and easy-to-use environment.”

By the sounds of it, the GameSpy features on the Wii will be similar to DS games such as Animal Crossing, but the gamer in my can’t hope but wish that Nintendo will incorporate more functionality then that of the DS Wifi Experience. There is talk about more in the Press Release “As part of an ongoing partnership with Nintendo, GameSpy has developed middleware technology to enable Wii titles to offer community features, such as friend rosters, advanced matchmaking capabilities and comprehensive rankings data.”, but will leaderboards and friends list make it back into the Wii proper?

We can only dream.
