Original Nintendo DS Lives On

Blue Nintendo DSNintendo as expected has come out in defence of its original, and innovative dual screen device the “DS large”.

The company has stated to the media that “as long as there is demand for the system” Nintendo will continue to support it. With the recent launch of the slim, redesigned lite version of the console, many gamers thought Nintendo would discontinue the console, as in comparison, the Lite version is the far superior machine. This leads people to speculate just who exactly would want to purchase the “original” DS, as currently Nintendo haven’t mentioned any price cuts regarding the machine, so at present it stands to retail for only ten pounds less than the Lite version.

Though Nintendo themselves still remain convinced that there will still be demand for the original DS console. Speaking to gaming publication Gamesindustry.biz a Nintendo representative had this to say on the subject:

Don’t forget that the Pink and Blue DS units are only available in the old model, which account for a large percentage of our sales to girls. And like Japan we haven’t seen any drop off in sales of the old model in the run-up to the launch of DS Lite.

This may well be true, as I know for a fact those two coloured original units are selling like hotcakes over here, though of course it’s apparent that interest will wane slightly in face of the DS Lite being readily available for purchase. One thing I do personally find interesting is the fact that Nintendo haven’t created a Nintendogs bundle with the DS Lite yet, considering it’s currently the best selling game on the system in the UK.

I believe the reasoning behind this is due to the company hoping that consumers will purchase the coloured edition of the original DS to play this game, as Nintendogs comes included at a cheaper price point. Though it’s more than likely that we will see in-store promotions from various retailers counteracting this. Either way it will be certainly be interesting to see just how much longer the original DS can survive when its far superior younger brother has taken the spotlight.

    Hi mate!

I really don’t see the point in this. If somene wants to buy a DS they would naturally go for the Lite. People would buy the new technology instead of the old.

wtf is nintendo doing? why continue to manufacture the old ds? they will soon have pink ( http://ds.ign.com/articles/715/715350p1.html ) in japan and they already have 2 shades of blue in japan; why can’t they just make every color available everywhere insted of making certain colors available in certain places??? they wont make very much money off the old ds

    Yup.

Currently the only people I have noticed purchasing the older machine are the ones who are buying it purely because it’s pink, and comes bundeled with Nintendogs

As soon as Nintendo release a Nintendogs bundel with the newly announced Pink Ds Lite, then the original will be made obsolete…

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with them continuing to sell the original DS. I really don’t like the DS Lite very much, considering that it’s much more expensive and not as sturdy as the original. Does anyone know where I could buy the original one?

Lol obviously the Lite is way better. Anyone who likes the original is a noob.

    NINTENDO DS LITE ROCKZ!!!

I am on my second DS Lite in less than a year and already it’s top screen is not working. The Lites are very cheaply constructed and the hinge cracks easily. This time my son can still play the bottom screen, the first time it wouldn’t play at all. If he didn’t have so many DS games I’d be shopping for a different unit, but am considering buying an original, as I’m not wasting anymore money on the Lite!
