Nintendo Wii graphics on par with Xbox 360?

We know forsure that Nintendo is keeping some secrets about the Wii close to their chests, are the graphic capabilities one of them? I just read this article over at Mozlapunk, and they think that it is one of the biggest secrets.

Our sources tell us the dev kit specs that IGN has been touting about the place of late are not final dev kit specifications. The most likely scenario is that IGN has only talked to third party developers and apparently third party developers do not have final dev kits, in fact only Nintendo themselves and their second party developers have their hands on final hardware. Well, that’s not entirely true, we hear Square Enix is the only third party developer to have a final development kit and they have had it for quite some time. People expecting the company’s Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles sequel to be a half-baked, faux FF title are in for a surprise according to the informer.

It makes for an interesting, if not headscratching, read at any rate. I’m not totally convinced that the Wii will display Xbox 360 quality graphics, but who knows. Nintendo could possibly drop in a top of the line graphic chip very late in the game without causing any problems if their development APIs were good.

I’m hoping that Nintendo’s final secrets are big enough to warrant all the speculation that is happening right now. There is nothing worse then a bunch of pissed off fanboys/haters :)

well according to what Nintendo said at E3, the ATi graphics chip has yet to be finalized and they are still working on it. With that in mind, I doubt *anyone* has a “final” dev kit. On the flip side of the coin, it was mentioned that the ATi chip being developed is a sibling (or customized) version of the R520 chip which I believe is in the ATi x1800 card. So if that’s true, then the Wii sounds like it will be at least as powerful as the xbox 360 at least in terms of graphics chip.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they come comparitively close, due to ATI manufactureing both Graphics Processors for Nintendo & Microsoft, however you need to remember Nintendo plans on having a more affordable console as well, and the technology behind the controller I bet doesnt come cheap. I’d like to hope your right, but I bet we could expect a $299 price tag if that were the case. Still, a nominal price to pay for the sheer enjoyment and quality the system aims to deliver.

But, after watching “extensive” (lol), coverage of E3 ‘06 Live on G4 this past weekend. I wouldnt make that claim as of yet. The probability that the consoles final specs are not what dev kits have been including is moer than likely an actuality. However, one quick look at Red Steel, against any FPS Ubisoft has developed for X360, and its painfully apparent the limitations on the graphical capabilities on Wii are Grande (you like tha eh?).

Anyways, What im trying to say is, don’t get your hopes up. We know that nintendo stated previously, its focus was not to deliver the best quality of graphics in this generation, besides the will have a new exciting way to play games, a great list of titles, and substantially lower price point to already entice people. I’m gonna bet that they will have a huge percentage of the market share this gen, mostly because I think (as Peter Moore suggested) people will be inclined to pick up both systems. I bought my 360 yesterday, you can bet I’m excited to get my hands on a Wii too!

lets cross our fingers. Originally the wii was being compared to the power of an Xbox, slightly better. The 360 supports HD up to 1080i, and the Wii has no hd support… I think comparitively, it will be impossible to put them on the same level. But I guess, maybe having them both run on standard A/V cables the look may be simililar… (having not hooked up my 360 to a regular tv component I cant comment on the quality). I do recall hearing the processor being a sibling of that chipset. Like i said, ATI is working for both, so they have all the blueprints to both architecture and can easily build something of equal or greater quality. Although, I think the lack of HD support will lessen the quality (at least to a certain extent). I can’t wait to hear the final specs though!! And see some new screens :) Only 7 Months away :D Wwwwiiiiiiiiii, this is going to be fun.

    (Plenty of time)

Don’t forget ATI stated that the ATI Hollywood would not be based on an existing technology. Who knows what Wii graphics have in store. H/W displacement mapping in the final version? A new shader model?

Im still not 100% sure about this, but the reports of a havok engine for the Wii certainly means that the cpu can perform more efficiently. The graphics card hasnt actually been finished so we dont know whats in store. If this rumour is true then the wii could exceed the graphical output on a STANDARD DEFINITON TV. however, since tboth other systems use so much power to support hi def then maybe nintendo could pull something out of the hat for an SD TV. Besides, nintendo are using something called “enhanced definition”, which is basically somwhere in between SD and HD. Wii looks like a system that isnt about clockspeeds but efficiency with its dedicated hardware. GC was damn good at outputting graphics on par with Xbox with games like RE4 and MP Echoes so why couldnt nintendo do this with the wii. We’ll just have to wait and see

I think it might be in range, but not any better. if it is supposed to be compared to an xbox, 360 is much higher than that

  7. 7 xfan

i thinnk if it is supposed to be compared to an xbox, it wont be close to a 360

  8. 8 logisticality

the system is already out and the graphics look ok, but some of the games werent even specifically made for the Wii. Im sure it hasnt been but to its full potential. As for being on par with the Xbox 360, i dont think so but it should be about 6/10 of the way from an Xbox graphics to an Xbox 360 graphics.

i have played my 360 on both SD an HD and the graphics are really good on both there isnt a big difference. since the wii doesnt support HD, when you play the console on an HD tv it looks almost the same as it does when you play it on a SD tv. obviously the 360’s graphics are better than the wii’s because it supports HD, but when you play one or the other console on a SD tv the graphics are about the same. i can say this because i own both consoles and there in my room and i dont have a HD tv in it. the wii’s graphics are a lot better than the xbox’s though that is for sure.

the wii does support hd but special cables are needed

  11. 11 jack of all trades

No it does not. The HD cable is just a cable that lets your wii hook up to a HDTV, it does not magically give you HD graphics on the wii.

  12. 12 peter

yh it does the graphics are betta once u hook up the wii to HD

  13. 13 damnjulien

it would b awesome if they made sumthing like the “expansion pack” on the n64 that improves the wii performance
