Nintendo DS in the far east

As is common knowledge, sales for the Nintendo DS in the far east have been nothing short of remarkable.
With DS Lite units still scarce on the ground, and the console receiving heavy marketing treatment, sales for the console are still continuing to rise at a rather impressive rate. In the last month 575,000 units have been shifted, which in comparison against previous sales figures show that the consoles popularity shows no signs of declining. All together the console has managed to sell an impressive 2.6 million units, which for a handheld gaming console is incredible.
The statistics for software are also equally as impressive. The gob smackingly fantastic New Super Mario Brothers game has sold 931,000 copies. This means in total it has shifted 1.8 million copies, again rather impressive for a handheld title. Nintendo it seems are currently growing from strength to strength.
After sales of its disappointing GameCube console, which although had a lot of potential, sadly lacked third party support, the company’s situation appeared all but doomed. But with the current worldwide success of its handheld Nintendo DS system, the company’s sales figures, profits and reputation appears back on track. This certainly looks set to bode well for Nintendo’s revolutionary home entertainment system the Wii, which is expected to launch worldwide in November 2006.

Those are indeed great numbers for the DS. Nintendo seems to do much better with handhelds (GameBoy, GBA, DS) than with full consoles. Maybe that trend will change when the Wii comes out later this year.
