Gates not moved by Wii controller
Published by dasme 3 years, 1 month ago in News.
While other high level execs at Sony and Microsoft are giving Nintendo their props, Microsoft chairman Bill Gates has stated that “[motion sensing is] something that’s not mainstream for most games”. In an interview with MTV news, Gates talked about the 360 and Microsoft’s plans for the future. He did take some time to talk about motion sensing controllers in general, dismissing their effectiveness in gaming.
It’s tough because sometimes you move the controller, and you don’t [mean] to fly into the ground. You just want to put the controller down,” he said. “People aren’t that good at totally standing still. Even pilots actually sit in a chair when they do their flying. So there’s a lot to be learned about these controllers.”
Seems to me like he is trying to make up for the fact that the 360 will be the only console without one such controller when the Wii and PS3 launch later this year. Gates also made mention to the failed Sidewinder controller that had motion sensing technology, stating that moving your controller isn’t mainstream for most games. Realistically the failure of Microsoft’s own controller was more due to poor technology and software support then motion sensing being non-mainstream or obsolete.
Will Microsoft play some catch-up and roll out a motion sensing controller as well? Personally I’m thinking yes, but time will tell.

To add a comment on this it should be known that Bill Gates and microsoft have some experience in the motion sensor field.
Does anyone remember that motion sensor sidewinder controler for the PC?
That controller didnt sell at all. Was a big flop and from my own try with it, it was really tough to use.
Though it was back then and things could have changed by now, basic rotation motion sensing just isnt good. Though I would love to pick up one of those old Sidewinder controllers anyway jsut for the fun of the gimmick ^_^
Nintendo is doing a more free range version of this to allow actual swinging of controllers rather than just tiliting, so Bill Gates is just trying to defend his Xbox’s lack of “innovation”
Though personaly the Xbox360 looks like a good machine too me, but a big sorta company scam to leech your money. Like microtransactions and a more expensive version wich makes the other version pointless but makes the system seem cheaper.
Wich is really a dumb stradegy.
With sony, they are basicly using the same tech that the sidewinder had. Wich in my experence (with a BMX game) it was not fun, and crashing into walls was like fighitng with large magnets.
Though it really depends on the software. Hopefully the new Monkeyball will make it to the PS3 too xD It would work well with that.
Besides the fact that it’ll work better on the Wii.
To me, sounds like sony is just trying to make sure some Wii third party games are portable to the PS3. Wich sounds like not a bad approach besides the fact that they arent the underdog this generation and most poeple would pay less for the same game rather than just get less control at the expense of extra graphics and some extra added features.
Anyway, for those who skip my long speech there.
Point is, Bill Gates knows what hes talking about and the Microsoft Sidwinder (forgot the name of the motion sensor one) motion sensor simply didnt do well when they tried it.
But Its already obvoius that Nintendo is doing a differnt approach with their controller, but motion sensing can be over rated.
Though I think Id rather go with a cheaper console that doesnt ask for my credit card so I can play an extra level wich I shoulda been able to earn anyway.
The control will be worth the money pinching.
He was talking about the PS3 controller in that quote. Microsoft is basically trying to ally with Nintendo against Sony, so he wouldn’t say this kind of thing even he he was thinking it.
@Thomas Ella
He wasn’t talking about the PS3 or the Wii controller specifically. The quote just shows his general view on motion sensing controllers.
Gates just better watch when the Wii over sells the XBox 360
Why does it say 5 Responses to “Gates not moved by Wii controller†when there are only 4 comments? (I’m talking about before I posted this comment.)
