Elebits, everything that we know

Elebits

One of the more interesting Wii things that surfaced before E3, was Konami’s announcement of their first Wii title… Elebits.

ElebitsWhen I first read the descriptions of this title released in Famitsu, I immediately had visions of Pikmin or Pokemon popping into my head. After reading on further I realized that this isn’t just an attempt to capitalize on the already established genre; cute characters or not, this game is different.

In Elebits the goal of the game is to find all the hidden Elebits in the given level. Doing so will not only allow you to progress further in the game, but provide you with more power which aids in your interaction with the game. Shingo Mukaitouge, the game’s designer, explained the three main concepts of the game in an interview with Famitsu.

The Elebits game design stems from three concepts, Mukaitouge revealed: letting the player feel like they’re actually touching the inside of the screen; finding stuff by moving things; and Konami’s creation of a new character, the Elebits themselves.

Fast forward to E3, where Elebits was on display, and all was made clear. According to a hands-on article over on Gamespot, all was made clear. Interacting with the world is accomplished with the Wiimote; using the energy beam that shows up based on where you are pointing, allowing you to move objects or zap the hiding Elebits to add their power to your energy stores. In the E3 demo, which took place in a small house, you had to find the Elebits by opening cabinets or moving small appliances. The Elebits just don’t stand there where uncovered either, so you’ll have to have a quick draw to Zap them into your energy store.

After watching some of the videos and reading some of the hands-on reports, this game was quickly elevated to my must-buy list. Games like Elebits lend well to the new Wiimote and the drastically different control methods that it offers. Hopefully other developers will “Think Different” and work on games like this one; not just work on ports of their other console titles. I think that will be the key area that will make or break this new platform.

We’ll see how this game progresses as we move forward to the Wii launch. As always, stay clicked to WiiSpot for all the information on this game as it is released.

It looks interesting but I’m not all that sure about it because I think that it could be quite a dull game.

This could be a lot of fun. This level of interaction is never a bad thing, it’s just a question of whether there’s very much too it or if it’s a relatively hollow concept…
