Datel aims to make Wii region free

Datel Wii Free LoaderAfter broken Nintendo promises (Yes Perrin Kaplan, I’m talking to you) leading up to launch, it looks like all the Wii users out there will finally be able to play other regions games on their Wii. Well, we will be able to do that when Datel releases a Wii version of their great Freeloader software.

If you are unfamiliar with this product, the Freeloader was a Gamecube disc that allowed one to play other region games on your console. For example, you could play that great Japanese import on your North American gamecube with a little help from your Freeloading friend. After the Wii hit I heard mixed results in getting the GC Freeloader to work on the Wii, but was very happy to hear that Datel was working on a Wii version as well.

After experiencing imports on my DS and the fact that they JUST WORK without modding or any intervention, I was really pissed to hear that the Wii was being locked down. I enjoy importing titles here and there, and will be sure to pick up a copy of the Wii Freeloader when it hits so I can play some of those great and quirky Japanese Wii releases.
